Good morning people who trust God’s purposes

John 21:15-17 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love Me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “You know that I love You.” Jesus said, “Feed My lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love Me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, You know that I love You.” Jesus said, “Take care of My sheep.” The third time He said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love Me?” He said, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed My sheep.”

Sometimes we get frustrated when God repeatedly asks us a question. But God always has a reason for the amount of times He asks us something – even if at the time we don’t understand it.

Peter denied Jesus three times. Three times Peter said he didn’t know Jesus, and in so doing, he said he didn’t love Him. This was a dark day in Peter’s life and it must have been a hurtful day for Jesus too.

As I typed that last line I realise that we often focus on how we feel in moments of failure. We can often feel terrible. We can often feel unworthy. We can often be so focused on ourselves that we don’t pause long enough to see what God feels.

God does feel pain. God does get disappointed when we make wrong decisions, but He does so for different reasons than we do. God feels it when we muck up because of how much He cares for us. You see, God always keeps His purpose for us in the forefront of His mind. He never loses sight of His original intention and design.

And sometimes that’s why God asks us a question more than once.

Peter denied Jesus three times and it was in asking Peter three times if he loved Him that Peter realised Jesus was reinstating and reaffirming him.

God always has a purpose for every question He asks
