#709 – Respecting Choices

Good morning people who want to understand God

Luke 15:11-13 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.

God could make us do anything He wants but He respects our ability to choose. God is not after robotic obedience and shallow relationships. God desires a deepening relationship with every person He has breathed life into.

God respects our right to live life with a ‘give me my share’ attitude. This attitude is so prevalent in the world today. Many believers and unbelievers live for self. Does God care about our choices? Yes He does, very much in fact, but not for the reason many of us think.

God’s heart breaks when we choose our own way of living. He is not focused on controlling us. He is not upset that we haven’t done exactly what He wanted, like we are a disappointment to Him. No, God’s heart breaks because He knows of the pain that our selfish choices will cause. He sees the broken relationships and the broken lives and His heart breaks.

I believe with all my heart that we need to choose wisely. In fact here’s what the Bible says about our choices.

Deuteronomy 30:19-20 This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him. For the Lord is your life, and He will give you many years in the land He swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Choose life; it comes from the Author of Life.
