Good morning people who know and trust and rely upon God’s goodness.
Galatians 5:25 NIV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
The fruit of God’s Spirit is goodness. Why? Because God is good!
I love the song ‘Goodness of God’ by Bethel Music and Jenn Johnson. It is true: all my life You have been faithful, all my life you have been so, so good.
And yet we don’t always “feel” or “see” the goodness of God in some moments of life. Here’s what David wrote:
Psalm 27:13 NIV I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
David experienced the goodness of God on many occasions. He also anticipated the goodness of God on other occasions when he did not feel or see the goodness of God (I speak from a human perspective).
It’s important to know the context of David’s words by looking at the verse before it and after it.
Psalm 27:12 NIV Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations.
Psalm 27:14 NIV Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
I read a cry of petition from David for deliverance from his enemies, followed by a declaration that he is confident that he will see God’s goodness while he is still alive, and finished by declaring that he knows he will need to be strong while he waits for the Lord to do what He has promised to do.
Does it sound familiar?
Here’s the truth: God is good, all the time – and all the time, God is good. This includes in the times when our feelings, thoughts and experiences would try to prove otherwise. Therefore, we will all have times when being strong and taking heart in the Lord is what will sustain us while we wait to see the goodness of God.
